테드 지오이아는 음악가이자 평론가, 작가이다. 또 미국의 유서 깊은 언론 매체 댈러스 모닝 뉴스로부터 “미국에서 가장 뛰어난 음악 역사가 중 한 명”이라는 극찬을 받을 만큼 훌륭한 음악 역사가이다. 스탠퍼드 대학교에서 영문학 학위를, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 철학과 경제학 학위를 받았으며, 스탠퍼드 경영대학원에서 MBA를 취득했다. 스탠퍼드 학부생 시절부터 음악과 글쓰기에 탁월한 감각을 보였던 테드 지오이아는 스탠퍼드 교내 문학잡지 세쿼이아와 교내 신문 스탠퍼드 데일리에서 에디터로 활동했으며, 스탠퍼드 대학 재즈 연구 프로그램을 설립하기도 했다. 실리콘밸리의 벤처 캐피털 커뮤니티에서 일하던 시절부터 “사무실에 피아노가 있는 남자”라는 별명으로 불릴 만큼 음악을 사랑한 그는 1990년부터 현재까지 30년 이상 음악가이자 작가로 활동하고 있다. 《재즈를 읽다(How to Listen to Jazz)》를 포함해 11권의 책을 집필했으며, 그중 두 권이 〈뉴욕 타임스〉 “올해 주목할 만한 책”으로 선정되었고, 음악 사회사에 관한 그의 전작 《노동요(Work Songs)》, 《치유의 노래(Healing Songs)》, 《사랑 노래(Love Songs)》는 미국 작곡가·작가·출판인협회ASCAP에서 선정하는 딤스 테일러상(Deems Taylor Award)을 수상했다. 재즈 포털 사이트 재즈 닷컴(www.jazz.com)의 창업자이자 편집장을 역임했으며, 〈뉴욕 타임스〉, 〈월스트리트 저널〉, 〈가디언〉 등 여러 매체에 글을 기고하고 있다. 그는 미국 국립예술 기금위원회(National Endowment for the Arts)의 의장으로 역임했던 탁월한 시인 대나 지오이아의 동생이기도 하다.
