¡°Gambler¡¯s World¡± is a science fiction novel published in 1961 by Keith Laumer.
In diplomacy with alien races, this novel shows the attitude of the protagonist who faces the situation rather than blindly following their culture. This is a work that raises curiosity about what the main character, Retief, will do in the kitchen and how his actions will affect the negotiations.
Summary
Diplomat Retief is preparing with his colleagues to attend a banquet on the planet Petreac. Ambassador Crodfoller urges his staff to adhere to the traditions of the Nenni, the planet's ruling class.
But Retief thinks the Nenni don't seem very smart and that there's a lot going on that they don't know about. As they enter the banquet hall, an accident occurs where a servant drops a tray. Magnan gets angry at the servant, but Retief reacts calmly.
The ambassador who witnessed this reprimands Retief, saying his behavior is unbecoming of the Nenni. Magnan also advises Retief to learn the Nenni's attitude, but Retief says he does not like their behavior...
