"The Man of Destiny" is a one-act play by George Bernard Shaw published in 1897.
The play features Napoleon Bonaparte as its main character and is set in 1796 during his Italian campaign. The play deals with an episode when Napoleon was still a young and ambitious general.
The plot revolves around Napoleon's encounter with a mysterious woman at an Italian inn. This woman has an important letter about Napoleon's wife, Josephine, and Napoleon wants to retrieve it.
Through this play, Shaw explores Napoleon's character and his ambitions for power. In particular, the intellectual confrontation between Napoleon and the mysterious woman deals with the nature of power, gender, and political maneuvering.
In "The Man of Destiny," Shaw uses the historical figure of Napoleon as a medium to express his philosophical and political views. Through Napoleon, he explores the power of individual will and its impact on history.
This play is a testament to Shaw's signature wit, witty dialogue, and sharp social critique. In particular, his progressive views on gender roles and power relations are well displayed.
"The Man of Destiny" is less well known than Shaw's other famous works, but it is considered an important work that demonstrates his dramaturgy and ideological depth.
This play is a good example of Shaw's ability to deal with universal human nature and social issues through historical figures. It also deals with themes that are still relevant today, such as power, gender, and political maneuvering, making it an interesting work for modern audiences.

Summary
The twelfth of May, 1796, in north Italy, at Tavazzano, on the road from Lodi to Milan. The afternoon sun is blazing serenely over the plains of Lombardy, treating the Alps with respect and the anthills with indulgence, not incommoded by the basking of the swine and oxen in the villages nor hurt by its cool reception in the churches, but fiercely disdainful of two hordes of mischievous insects which are the French and Austrian armies. Two days before, at Lodi, the Austrians tried to prevent the French from crossing the river by the narrow bridge there; but the French, commanded by a general aged 27, Napoleon Bonaparte, who does not understand the art of war, rushed the fireswept bridge, supported by a tremendous cannonade in which the young general assisted with his own hands.
