Science Fiction Novels in English _ Jinx Ship to the Rescue by Alfred Coppel
Alfred Koppel's "Jinx Ship to the Rescue" is a science fiction short story published in the 1950s. This work is an adventure story set in space, and as the title suggests, the 'doomed ship' plays an important role. The novel deals with the themes of space exploration and the human spirit of challenge. In this work, Koppel excitingly depicts the future of space travel technology, the dangers that come with it, and human responses to unexpected situations. The story is likely to deal with the process of a spaceship with a 'doomed' reputation performing a rescue mission in a crisis. Like Koppel's other works, this novel emphasizes the importance of human courage, creativity, and cooperation based on scientific imagination. "Jinx Ship to the Rescue" can be seen as a work that well exemplifies the optimism and adventurous spirit of space exploration that are typical characteristics of 1950s science fiction.
Summary
Brevet Lieutenant Commander David Farragut Strykalski III of the Tellurian Wing, Combined Solarian Navies, stood ankle deep in the viscous mud of Venusport Base and surveyed his new command with a jaundiced eye. The hot, slimy, greenish rain that drenched Venusport for two-thirds of the 720-hour day had stopped at last, but now a miasmic fog was rising from the surrounding swampland, rolling across the mushy landing ramp toward the grounded spaceship. Visibility was dropping fast, and soon porto-sonar sets would have to be used to find the way about the surface Base. It was an ordinary day on Venus.
