▶ In 1697 Charles Perrault published in France a book of children's tales entitled "Contes de ma Mere Oye," and this is really the first time we find authentic record of the use of the name of Mother Goose, although Perrault's tales differ materially from those we now know under this title. They comprised "The Sleeping Beauty," "The Fairy," "Little Red Riding-Hood," "Blue Beard," "Puss in Boots," "Riquet with the Tuft," "Cinderella," and "Little Thumb;" eight stories in all. On the cover of the book was depicted an old lady holding in her hand a distaff and surrounded by a group of children listening eagerly. Mr. Andrew Lang has edited a beautiful English edition of this work (Oxford, 1888).

▶ 프랑스판 그림형제(Bruder Grimm)를 아시오? : 프랑스 아동 문학의 아버지(The French Father Of Fairy Tales) 샤를 페로(Charles Perrault, 1628~1703)는 자녀들에게 들려주기 위해 유럽 전역의 민간 동화를 채록하였으며, 옛날이야기(Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passe, 1697)란 제목으로 출간하였습니다. 이 작품에는 친숙한 신데렐라(Cendrillon, ou la Petite Pantoufle de verre), 잠자는 숲속의 미녀(La Belle au bois dormant), 빨간 두건(Le Petit Chaperon rouge), 푸른 수염(La Barbe Bleue), 장화신은 고양이(Le Chat botte) 등 현대의 우리에게도 친숙한 동화가 대거 실려 있답니다. 푸른 수염의 아내(La Barbe Bleue)란 작품은 2023년 발매한 르 세라핌(LE SSERAFIM)의 노래 이브, 프시케 그리고 푸른 수염의 아내(Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard's wife)의 모티브가 되면서 다시 한 번 화제가 되었습니다.

▶ NONE of us, whether children or adults, needs an introduction to Mother Goose. Those things which are earliest impressed upon our minds cling to them the most tenaciously. The snatches sung in the nursery are never forgotten, nor are they ever recalled without bringing back with them myriads of slumbering feelings and half-forgotten images.

▶ 1729년 로버트 샘버(Robert Samber, 1682~1745)가 옛날이야기(Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passe, 1697)를 영어판(Histories, or Tales of Past Time)으로 번역한 이후 수백 년간 영미권 독자에게도 엄마 거위 마더 구스(Mother Goose)가 널리 읽히게 되었습니다. 우리에게는 다소 낯설지만, 유럽의 어린이에게는 무척이나 친근한 캐릭터로 영국 동요 모음집 마더 구스의 멜로디(Mother Goose's Melody, or, Sonnets for the Cradle) 등으로 확장되었습니다.

▶ Many of these nursery rhymes are complete tales in themselves, telling their story tersely but completely; there are others which are but bare suggestions, leaving the imagination to weave in the details of the story. Perhaps therein may lie part of their charm, but however that may be I have thought the children might like the stories told at greater length, that they may dwell the longer upon their favorite heroes and heroines. For that reason I have written this book. In making the stories I have followed mainly the suggestions of the rhymes, and my hope is that the little ones will like them, and not find that they interfere with the fanciful creations of their own imaginations.
