▶ 1835년 출간된 한스 크리스티안 안데르센 동화집(Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen by H. C. Andersen)에는 127편이 수록되어 있으며, 본지는 2권으로 분권하여 소개합니다. 다른 동화집과 중첩되는 작품이 적지 않으나, 첫 번째 작품 이야기(A Story)와 127번째 작품 올해의 이야기(The Story Of The Year)의 제목이 서로 수미쌍관을 이루는 것이 특징입니다. 두 작품 모두 대중적으로 널리 알려지지 않은 작품이니만큼 색다른 안데르센 동화를 찾는 독자들에게 일독을 권합니다.
▶ 이야기(A Story) : 죽음을 앞둔 아내를 무덤에 안치한 목사에게 아내를 닮은 기묘한 존재가 나타납니다. 그녀는 지옥을 설파한 목사에게 영원한 형벌을 받게 될 죄인의 머리카락 한 올을 요구("Give me one hair?only one single hair?from the head of the sinner for whom the fire shall never be extinguished, of the sinner whom God will condemn to eternal punishment in hell.")하는데...?! 과연 목사는 새벽닭이 울 때까지 영원히 지옥 불에 불타오를 순수한 악인을 발견할 수 있을까요?
▶ "Follow me," said the dead woman. "It is thus granted to us. By my side you will be able to fly wherever your thoughts wish to go. Invisible to men, we shall penetrate into their most secret chambers; but with sure hand you must find out him who is destined to eternal torture, and before the cock crows he must be found!" As quickly as if carried by the winged thoughts they were in the great city, and from the walls the names of the deadly sins shone in flaming letters: pride, avarice, drunkenness, wantonness?in short, the whole seven-coloured bow of sin. ▷ "나를 따라와." 죽은 여자가 말했다. "그러면 우리에게 허락된 거야. 내 곁에서 네 생각이 가고 싶은 곳이면 어디든 날 수 있을 거야. 사람들에게 보이지 않게, 우리는 그들의 가장 은밀한 방까지 침투할 거야. 하지만 확실한 손으로 영원한 고문을 받을 자를 찾아내야 해. 닭이 울기 전에 그를 찾아야 해!" 마치 날개 달린 생각에 실려 가는 것처럼 빠르게 그들은 거대한 도시로 들어갔고, 벽에서 치명적인 죄의 이름이 불타는 글자로 빛났다. 교만, 탐욕, 술 취함, 방탕함?즉, 죄의 일곱 가지 색깔의 활.
▶ 벌거벗은 임금님(The Emperor’s New Suit, 1837) : ‘벌거벗은 임금님’의 원제는 ‘황제의 새로운 옷(Kejserens nye Klæder, The Emperor’s New Suit)’으로 제목 자체에는 옷을 입지 않았다는 의미가 전혀 없습니다. 한국의 독자들은 제목만으로도 스포일러를 피할 수 없는 셈인데요, 이는 일본어 제목 하다카노오사마(はだかの王?)를 그대로 옮기면서 발생한 일이랍니다. 중국어 제목 황제적신장(皇帝的新?)이 원제를 정확하게 옮긴 ‘황제의 새로운 옷’이란 점을 감안하면, 살짝 아쉬운 대목이지요.
▶ "But he has nothing on at all," said a little child at last. "Good heavens! listen to the voice of an innocent child," said the father, and one whispered to the other what the child had said. "But he has nothing on at all," cried at last the whole people. That made a deep impression upon the emperor, for it seemed to him that they were right; but he thought to himself, "Now I must bear up to the end." And the chamberlains walked with still greater dignity, as if they carried the train which did not exist. ▷ "하지만 그는 아무것도 입지 않았어요." 어린아이가 마침내 말했습니다. "맙소사! 순진한 아이의 목소리를 들어보세요." 아버지가 말했고, 한 사람이 다른 사람에게 아이가 한 말을 속삭였습니다. "하지만 그는 아무것도 입지 않았어요." 마침내 온 사람들이 외쳤습니다. 그 말은 황제에게 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. 황제에게는 그들이 옳다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 하지만 그는 스스로에게 "이제 끝까지 견뎌내야겠어."라고 생각했습니다. 그리고 시종들은 마치 존재하지 않는 기차를 짊어지고 다니는 것처럼 더욱 위엄 있게 걸었습니다.
▶ 인어공주(The Little Mermaid, 1837) : 300년의 수명을 누리지만, 바다거품으로 사라지는 인어와 백년도 채 살지 못하지만, 영혼을 가진 인간의 삶……. 당신의 선택은?
▶ "Why have not we an immortal soul?" asked the little mermaid mournfully; "I would give gladly all the hundreds of years that I have to live, to be a human being only for one day, and to have the hope of knowing the happiness of that glorious world above the stars.” ▷"왜 우리는 불멸의 영혼을 가지고 있지 않은가요?" 작은 인어가 애절하게 물었다. "저는 제가 살아야 할 수백 년을 기꺼이 바칠 것입니다. 단 하루만 인간으로 살 수 있다면, 그리고 별 위의 영광스러운 세상의 행복을 알 수 있는 희망을 가질 수 있다면요.”
▶ 엄지공주(Little Tiny or Thumbelina, 1835) : 마법사의 씨앗에서 자라난 튤립 꽃봉오리에서 태어난 소녀라니! 그야말로 동화적인 상상력 아닌가요? 우리에겐 엄지공주로 불리지만, 원제는 덴마크어 토멜리제(Tommelise), 영문 제목 썸벨리나(Thumbelina)는 어디까지나 엄지손가락(Thumb)만한 소녀(Thumbelina)란 뜻입니다. 그녀의 어머니 또한 왕실과는 관련이 없는 평범한 여인입니다. 엄지공주는 과연 두꺼비, 풍뎅이, 두더지의 위협으로부터 무사히 돌아와 엄지왕자와 행복하게 살 수 있을까요? 흥미로운 점은 제비가 엄지공주의 보살핌 덕분에 건강을 회복한다는 대목인데, 어랏? 이거 흥부가 구해준 제비가 연상되지 않나요?! 덴마크 오덴세에서도 제비는 보살핌이 필요한 녀석이라니……. 찌찌뽕!!
▶ The little prince was at first quite frightened at the bird, who was like a giant, compared to such a delicate little creature as himself; but when he saw Tiny, he was delighted, and thought her the prettiest little maiden he had ever seen. He took the gold crown from his head, and placed it on hers, and asked her name, and if she would be his wife, and queen over all the flowers. ▷ 어린 왕자는 처음에는 새가 거인 같았고, 자기와 같은 섬세한 작은 생물에 비하면 무서웠지만, 쪼꼬미를 보고는 기뻐하며, 그녀가 자신이 본 가장 예쁜 처녀라고 생각했습니다. 그는 자신의 머리에서 금관을 벗어 그녀의 머리에 씌우고, 그녀의 이름을 물었고, 그녀가 그의 아내가 되어 모든 꽃의 여왕이 되어 줄 것인지 물었습니다.
