A young governess is hired to care for two orphaned children, Miles and Flora, at a remote estate called Bly. She is instructed by her employer, the children's distant uncle, never to contact him, regardless of circumstances. Upon arriving, she forms a bond with Flora and their housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, but soon notices strange occurrences. Miles is expelled from school under mysterious circumstances, adding to her unease. The governess begins seeing figures of a man and a woman who she learns are Peter Quint, the former valet, and Miss Jessel, the children¡¯s previous governess, both of whom are dead. She suspects they are haunting Bly and influencing the children. As she observes the children¡¯s behavior, she becomes convinced they are aware of and complicit in the spirits' presence. Her growing fear leads her to confide in Mrs. Grose while attempting to protect Miles and Flora.
