영어를 잘하기 위해서는 듣기와 말하기 연습이 필수인데, 듣기 시험 중심의 교육에 길들여진 대부분의 영어 학습자들은 듣기는 잘하면서 말하기 학습에는 소홀하여 대화를 잘하지 못한다. 말을 잘 못하는 이유는 여러 가지가 있겠지만 말하는 연습을 하지 않았기 때문이다. 따라서 한국인에게 실용회화를 가르치는 효과적인 방법은 무조건 외우는 것보다는 자신과 직결된 내용을 말해보도록 해야 한다는 것이다. 그러기 위해 오픈 회화 방식을 이용하는 것이다.
이 책은 어떠한 제한 없이 학습자가 말하고자 하는 내용을 빈칸에 넣어가면서 회화를 연습할 수 있는 형식으로 이루어져 있다. 영어 문장 아래에 한글 해석을 적은 이유는 한 예를 보여 주기 위한 것이므로, 학습자는 한글로 적힌 내용뿐만 아니라 다른 단어도 활용하여 연습을 하여야 효과적이다. 수년간의 문법과 독해와 영작을 공부하였으나 정작 실제 생활에서 원어민과 말할 기회를 많이 갖지 못한 학생들에게 도움을 주고자 이 책을 발행하게 되었다.
