최근 몇 년동안 요가(yoga)는 다이어트나 몸매 다듬기에 좋은 운동으로 오해받아 오다 사실은 명상을 포함한 광범위한 수행체계라는 것이 점점 알려지고 있다. 또한 수행에 관해서 혼자 깨달음을 얻어 자족하는 삶이 아니라 부처님이나 예수님 등 모든 인류의 성인이 그러했듯이 나누고 베풀고 함께하는 삶이라는 인식이 점점 퍼져가고 있다. 이러한 인식의 변화를 이끌어오는데 한 몫을 해온 지은이가 “요가는 삶의 철학이자 과학이다.”라고 천명해온 자신의 일관된 삶의 모습을 보여주는 요가명상 수행에세이가 바로 2007년에 나온 저자의 책 『나의 삶 요가와 자연 1~2』이다.

이번에 이 책의 영어 번역본이 나왔다, 저자는 외국의 여러 나라에서 서양인들을 대상으로도 워크샵을 다수 진행한 경험이 있는데 국내에서도 오랫동안 저자에게 요가를 수련한 함께 했던 서양인 제자들 중의 한 사람이 이 책을 영어로 번역하여 서양사람들이 본다면 신선한 자극이 될 것이고 서양인들이 가진 한국의 요가와 동양정신에 관한 궁금증을 조금이라도 해소하는데 도움이 될 것이라며 권유한 것이 계기가 되었다. 20여 년이 넘게 요가를 수행해온 지은이의 인생 및 수행여정과 요가수행 철학을 엿보며 책을 읽는 영어권 독자들에게 ‘생활 속의 수행’을 어떻게 실천할 것인가에 대한 실마리를 찾을 수 있는 책이다.
