1776년에 출간된 토머스 페인의 정치철학서.
미국 독립의 정당성과 민주적인 공화정치의 정당성을 주장한 정치 팸플릿이다. 세습 군주제(世襲君主制)의 불합리성에 대해 신랄하게 비판하고, 독립에 따르는 경제적 이익과 독립의 역사적 의의 등을 명쾌하게 펼쳐 사람들에게 독립에 대한 열망을 불어넣었다. 페인의 주장은 1776년 7월 4일에 발표한 미국 독립 선언((美國獨立宣言)의 바탕이 되었다.
