일제강점기인 1916년 평안남도 평원에서 태어난 이중섭은 일본 유학시절을 거쳐 한국전쟁 중 부산과 제주도에서 피란생활을 했다. 그 후 통영, 진주, 서울, 대구 등을 전전하며 1956년 마흔 살을 일기로 생을 마감할 때까지 수많은 작품을 남겼다. 이중섭은 1970년대 이후 폭발적 사랑을 받으며 국민작가로 추앙을 받고 있다. 이 책에는 이중섭 탄생 100주년을 기념하여 그가 남긴 수채화, 유화, 스케치, 은지화, 엽서 등 걸작 135편을 모아 실었다.
