어느 날 어떤 남자가 왕에게 자기 딸이 밀짚을 황금으로 만들 수 있다고 말합니다. 왕은 딸에게 짚을 내려 주었는데 딸은 사흘 동안 방안에 있던 밀짚을 모두 황금으로 만들었어요. 사실 딸은 룸펠슈틸츠킨이라는 작은 도깨비의 도움을 받았는데 사흘 째 밤에는 이 다음에 태어날 아기를 주겠다고 약속을 하고 말았어요. 왕과 결혼한 딸은 자신의 이름을 맞춰야만 아기를 빼앗지 않겠다는 작은 도깨비의 수수께끼를 풀고 행복하게 살았답니다.
