한때 “나의 공산주의(共産主義)에 대한 신념은 종교적 신념과 같다. 그것은 인류를 위한 구원의 약속”이라고 썼을 만큼 공산주의를 지지했던 지드가, 소련작가동맹의 초청으로 소련을 돌아본 후 집필한 공산주의의 실체(實體)에 대한 비판적 기록이다.
