고아원 출신으로 고아원을 후원하는 이사 중 한 명의 도움으로 대학에 진학하게 된 제루샤 애버트. 후원자는 자신에 대한 정보도 알려주지 않고 대가를 바라지도 않지만, 다만 매달 편지를 쓰라는 이상한 조건을 내건다. 대학에 진학한 제루샤는 그 후원자를 키다리 아저씨라고 부르며 자신의 학교생활과 자신의 생각들을 담은 편지를 쓴다. 제루샤는 폐쇄적이었던 고아원 생활에서 벗어나 사회를 배우고 작가로서의 꿈도 키워 간다. 졸업 무렵, 제루샤는 어느덧 지적이고 교양 있으며 세련되면서도 동시에 독립심 강하고 자존감이 강한 여성이 되어 있다.
