《악의 꽃, 시집, THE FLOWERS OF EVIL》
1857년 그의 최대 걸작인 《악의 꽃》을 발표하였으나, 오히려 미풍 양속을 문란하게 한다는 이유로 벌금형을 받았다.

《악의 꽃》은 인간의 어두운 면과 악한 면을 날카로운 눈으로 파헤쳐 노래함으로써, 더럽고 보기 싫은 것에서 새로운 아름다움을 찾아내었다.

이 시는 당시로서는 이해되기 어려워 위고 같은 사람만이 "새로운 전율을 창조하였다"고 평하였다.
그 후 그는 상징주의를 비롯한 현대시에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며, 발레리는 "《악의 꽃》이 없었던들 상징주의가 없었을 것"이라고까지 하였다.
