To understand hand techniques of Taekwondo, we should know the universal principles of all martial arts. Hand techniques mean a movement using the arms. When we do it, our shoulder should be relaxed. To protect the vital points of our body (solar plexus, eyes, nose, philtrum, etc) our arms should be held in front of the chest, the hand and elbow have to be inside the vertical lines formed by the sides of the trunk(not elbows out like chicken wings). When punching, it is very important not only to throw the punch but also to pull it back sharply. If we can pull our hand back quickly, it will make the punch much stronger by the principle of action and reaction force.
