초등학교 영어에서는 문법을 배우지 않습니다. 학생들에게 영어 환경에 노출될 수 있는 기회 정도만 제공하는 것이 교육목표이기 때문일 것입니다. 하지만 초등학교 영어 교과서를 보면 이름만 붙지 않았지 문법들이 적용된 문장들이 수도 없이 많습니다. 예를 들면, be 동사, 조동사, 부정사, 동명사, 전치사, 인칭대명사와 의문대명사의 격 변화, 현재 진행형, be going to와 will 등의 미래시제, 과거시제, 비교급, 감탄문, 수동태, 관용어 등 그 다양성과 분량의 많음을 셀 수가 없습니다. 이와 같은 문법적 기능들에는 눈감은 채 문장의 뜻만을 설명하는 것은 실로 눈 가리고 아옹하는 처사일 것입니다.

이에 초등학생들이 교과서를 통하여 아무런 체계도 없이 어렵게 배우고 있는 내용들을 머릿속에 쉽게 정리할 수 있도록, 초등학교 교과서에 나온 문장들에 적용된 영문법들을 정리해 보았습니다. 어차피 고도의 문법들이 적용된 문장들이고, 또 중학교에 가면 배우게 될 영문법이라면, 지금부터 배워두는 게 쉽게 그리고 재미있게 영어를 공부하는 지름길이 될 것이라고 확신합니다. 중요한 내용을 발췌하여 소개하면 다음과 같습니다.

※ 우리 말에서는 단수로 보지만, 영어에서는 복수로 보는 것들
예컨대, 바지 한 벌을 가랑이가 두 개라 하여 복수로 보기 때문에 “How much are these pants?”라고 묻고, “They are 50 dollars.”처럼 대답한다.

1) scissors (가위) : 날이 두 개이므로
2) pants, trousers (바지) : 가랑이가 두 개이므로
3) glasses, sunglasses (안경, 선글라스) : 알이 두 개이므로
4) gloves, socks (장갑, 양말) : 두 개가 합하여 한 켤레이므로
5) shoes, boots (신발, 장화) : 두 개가 합하여 한 켤레이므로

상대방을 의식하지 않고 독백으로 자신의 느낌을 표현하는 문장을 말한다.
