한국의 역사와 문화, 생활습관, 정치와 경제 등 전 분야에 걸쳐 한국을 소개하는 영문 도서이다. 저자 김중순은 2007년 영문으로 저술한 Kimchi and IT라는 한국소개서가 아랍어와 베트남어 등 다른 언어로도 번역 출간될 만큼 균형적이고 중립적인 시각을 지닌 인류학자이다. 그가 이번에 저술한 Way Back into Korea는 전작에서 다루었던 주제에다 한국의 시세를 포함한 한국인의 기질, 문화적인 특성 등을 설명하는 내용들을 보강하고 이에 대해 고찰하는 내용까지 담고 있어 한국 사회의 다양한 면모를 두루 살펴볼 수 있다. 책은 ‘한국이 어떠한 나라인가’라는 질문에 명확한 대답을 제시하지는 않는다. 다만 여태까지의 한국을 형성하는 데 큰 역할을 한 요소들과 그들의 존재 이유에 대해 저자 역시 의문을 갖고 차근차근 고찰한다. 이를 통해 독자들 또한 한국의 내력과 특성에 대해 고민하며 저마다 ‘한국’이라는 나라에 대해 ‘한쪽에 치우치지 않은’ 대답을 스스로 찾아내게 될 것이다.
