Le Fanu's 1865 work was critically acclaimed for its mysterious atmosphere and detailed, realistic depiction.
Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu is an Irish author of gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the foremost ghost story writer of the 19th century and played a central role in the development of the Victorian era genre. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer". His three best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.
