Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu is an Irish author of gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the foremost ghost story writer of the 19th century and played a central role in the development of the Victorian era genre. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer". His three best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.
