Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu is an Irish author of gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the foremost ghost story writer of the 19th century and played a central role in the development of the Victorian era genre. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer". His three best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Summary
Laura falls in love with a tall man in black whom she meets while walking home one night, and is warned by her mother Cark, a former sage woman (midwife) known as a witch. Mother Cark suspects the man is a fairy and she advises Laura to stay away from him.
