He was the foremost ghost story writer of the 19th century and played a central role in the development of the Victorian era genre. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer". His three best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Summary
A poor widow and her small children live in a remote area in southern Ireland. She protects the children well because there is a place known as the haunt of fairies nearby. Plants and trees grow around her dilapidated hut, known for their natural properties of warding off evil.

One day, her three youngest children go missing, and when it gets dark, her mother and older daughter are convinced that the little ones have been kidnapped by fairies.
