"A Plea for Captain John Brown" is an essay written by Henry David Thoreau in 1859 to defend abolitionist John Brown from raiding the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, to initiate armed slavery. Thoreau's essay argues that Brown is a heroic figure who acted on his conscience and should be celebrated rather than condemned.

Summary
Thoreau begins by admitting that Brown's methods were extreme and illegal, but argues that Brown's cause was just and his actions were necessary to draw attention to the slavery issue.
Thoreau also criticized government and society for their complicity in slavery, saying "The law will never make men free. It is men who must make the laws free." He argues that true patriots are those who resist the unjust laws and institutions of their time, and that Brown is such a patriot.
Thoreau ends his essay by asking his fellow citizens to emulate Brown's courage and conviction.
