Summary
Thoreau also reflects on the individual's role in society and encourages readers to think for themselves and live intentionally. "Most luxuries and so-called comforts of life," he wrote, "are not only indispensable, but positive hindrances to the betterment of mankind."
In addition to reflections on nature and individualism, Thoreau also wrote about social issues, including slavery and the Mexican-American War. He criticizes the systems that perpetuate injustice and inequality and calls for reform and change.
