Summary
The Girl Who Laughs is a story with a romantic tone and a mysterious tone, and revolves around the relationship between Bloss and Lily Adder. Chambers is a writer famous for blurring the line between fantasy and reality, and this work also reflects these elements.

"A red-haired mop was sweeping the veranda. No one could be seen around the house. All the shutters of the stone and timber chalet were closed. The barn, stables, springhouse, and bottle factory appeared abandoned. Weeds choked the garden. Water fountains flowed in gray stone basins, and cat grass grew thickly on the oval lawns around the white flagpoles where the flags did not flutter."
