▶ 작품의 배경은 룰레아 여왕(Queen Lulea)이 다스리는 버지 숲(Forest of Burzee), 노랜드(Noland)와 익스(Ix)입니다. 오즈의 땅(Land of Oz)에 속하지 않지만, 오즈의 땅과 가깝다는 설정 때문에 오리지널 오즈의 마법사 14부작(The Original OZ books, 1900~1920)과 함께 읽기 좋은 작품입니다. 1914년 영화로 제작될 당시 작품명이 오즈의 마법 망토(The Magic Cloak of Oz)인 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.

▶ “Each possessor of the magic cloak may have one wish granted, provided the cloak is not stolen from its last wearer. In that case the magic power will not be exercised on behalf of the thief.”

▶ 춤추는 것이 더 이상 즐겁지 않아……. : 룰레아 여왕(Queen Lulea)은 버지 숲(Forest of Burzee)에서 요정들이 춤추는 모습을 보며, 더 이상 즐겁지 않다고 한탄합니다. 그러자 요정들은 마법의 힘이 깃든 마법의 망토를 만들자고 제안하고, 여왕은 이를 수락합니다. 마법의 망토는 입기만 하면 한 가지 소원을 들어주는데...?!

▶ “I am tired of dancing, my dears,” said she. “Every evening since the moon grew big and round we have come here to frisk about and laugh and disport ourselves; and although those are good things to keep the heart light, one may grow weary even of merrymaking. So I ask you to suggest some new way to divert both me and yourselves during this night.”

▶ 마법의 망토를 누구한테 입혀야하지?! : 때마침 국왕이 사망한 노랜드 왕궁(Kingdom of Noland)에서 소식을 전하기 위해 에레올(Ereol)이 방문하자, 그에게 마법의 망토를 맡기며 기묘한 조건을 겁니다.

▶ “Give it to the first unhappy person you meet,” said the Man in the Moon. “The happy mortals have no need of magic cloaks.” And with this advice the friendly face of the Man in the Moon faded away until only the outlines remained visible against the silver disk. The queen clapped her hands delightedly.

▶ 한편 노랜드의 참모들은 수도 놀(The capital city of Nole)에서는 왕의 후계자를 놓고 고민 중입니다. 뒤늦게 노랜드의 법률에 의거해 일출이 뜬 후 동쪽 문을 통과하는 47번째 사람이 국왕 혹은 여왕으로 선출된다는 법령을 확인하고, 모두들 동쪽 문으로 달려갑니다!! 가즈아!

▶ “In case the king dies, and there is no one to succeed him, the chief counselor of the kingdom shall go at sunrise to the eastward gate of the city of Nole and count the persons who enter through such gate as soon as it is opened by the guards. And the forty-seventh person that so enters, be it man, woman, or child, rich or poor, humble or noble, shall immediately be proclaimed king or queen, as the case may be, and shall rule all the kingdom of Noland forever after, so long as he or she may live. And if any one in all the kingdom of Nole shall refuse to obey the slightest wish of the new ruler, such person shall at once be put to death. This is the law.”

▶ 에레올은 구박받는 고아 소년 버디와 여동생 플러프를 보고, 여왕이 말했던 마법의 망토를 가질 자격이 있다고 생각했습니다. 망토의 힘도 모르지만, 예쁜 망토를 얻게 된 플러프는 자기도 모르게 소원을 빌게 되는데...?!

▶ “Ah, me!” sighed the little girl, half aloud. “I wish I could be happy again!” Then her childish heart gave a bound of delight, and she laughed aloud and brushed from her eyes the last tear she was destined to shed for many a day. For, though she spoke thoughtlessly, the magic cloak quickly granted to its first wearer the fulfilment of her wish.

And the people were glad enough to have a change of rulers, and pleased that so young a king had been given them. So they accepted both the law and the new king cheerfully, and soon dispersed to their homes to talk over the wonderful events of the day.
