▶ 채소 사세요~ 소년가장 채소 소년(Vegetable Boy) 윌 카든(Will Carden) : 제철소 사업가 아버지가 돌아가신 후 몰락한 윌의 카든 패밀리는 하루아침에 몰락했습니다. 가난한 와중에도 특유의 친근함으로 주변의 아이들과 어울리며, 작은 밭에서 채소를 길러 주변에 팔면서 억척스럽게 생활비를 버는 소년가장입니다. 하지만 윌의 친구 윌리엄스 형제들의 어머니는 채소 소년(Vegetable Boy)을 썩 좋게 생각하지 않는데…….

▶ 윌리엄스 형제(Williams siblings)의 12살 여동생이 바로 작품의 제목인 12살 애너벨(Annabel)입니다. 작가는 14살 메리 루이스(Mary Louise)가 예쁜데 반해, 애나벨은 주근깨도 있고, 코도 뭉툭한 못생긴 소녀로 묘사하였습니다. 그런데 남자 주인공은 못생긴 애나벨에게 호감을 느끼게 되는데...?!
▶ Then there was Annabel, the “odd one” of the Williams family, with a round, freckled face, a pug nose, tawny red hair and a wide mouth that was always smiling. Annabel was twelve, the favored comrade of her brothers and sisters, the despair of her lady mother because of her ugliness of feature, and the pet of Nora, the cook, because she was what that shrewd domestic considered “the right stuff.” Annabel, in spite of her bright and joyous nature, was shy with strangers, and at times appeared almost as reserved as her brother Theodore, which often led to her being misunderstood. But Will Carden was no stranger to the Williams children, being indeed a school-mate, and as they flocked around him this bright Saturday morning they showered questions and greetings upon their friend in a somewhat bewildering manner.

▶ 소년, 소녀를 구하다 : 한편 윌은 애나벨이 아이스 스케이팅을 하던 중에 호수에 빠졌을 때! 그녀의 목숨을 구하고, 이후 친분을 쌓게 됩니다. 이런! 여친의 아버지가 재벌이였군요! 철강 재벌(steel-magnate)인 애나벨의 아버지가 그의 존재를 알게 되었는데...?!
▶ The boys were quick to understand what he wanted, and a score of willing hands tore the rails from a fence that came down to the shore of the pond, and slid them along the ice so that they reached across the hole and both ends rested on a firm foundation. Will seized the first one that came within reach, and then a couple of the boys crept out upon the rails and caught hold of Annabel, drawing her from the icy water and carrying her safely to land. Others assisted Will and although he was dripping wet and his teeth chattered with cold, as soon as he reached safe ice he shook off the supporting hands of his friends and walked over to the unconscious girl.
